Shillong, the capital of medhalaya, has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the northeast india. It is situated at an attitude of 1,520 meters (4,990 feet) above sea level. It is situated on a plateau bound on the north by the Umiam gorge, on the northwest by the great mass of the Diengiei Hills that rise up to a height of 1,823 meters (6077 ft.) above sea level, and on the northeast by the hills of the Assam valley. It is also known as the “Scotland of the East” due to its striking similarity with the Scottish highlands. It is located at distance of 104 km from Guwahati, 295 km from Kaziranga, 578 km from Siliguri and 658 km from Darjeeling.

Description:

1. Shillong Peak :
Shillong Peak, Shillong Overview. At the height of 6449 ft and 1965 m above sea level, this is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird’s eye view.

2. Umiam Lake :
Umiam Lake is a reservoir located in the hills 15 km to the North of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created by damming the Umiam river in the early 1960s. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km.

3. Elephant Falls :
A popular tourist attraction near Shillong, Elephant falls is a combination of 3 rivers. One of the British officers named it as Elephant falls after they saw a rock which resembled as an elephant. This rock was later destroyed due to earthquake.

4. Mawlynnong village :
Mawlynnong is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state in North East India. It is famous for its cleanliness and natural attraction. It comes under the Pynursla community development block and Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) constituency.

5. Ward’s Lake :
Ward’s lake is a must-visit place when in this pristine north-eastern city. Also known as Pollock’s Lake, this artificial water body is encircled by an extensive lush garden and lies in the middle of the city.

6. Lady Hydari Park :
The Park got its name from the nature loving first lady of the state, Lady Hydari the wife of Governor of Assam. This mini zoo clubbed with a deer park stretches for more than one Kilometre and presents some of the best grown rose beds.

7. Don Bosco Museum :
The Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures at DBCIC (Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures) is Asia’s largest Museum of Indigenous Cultures of its kind. In it the visitor can have an overview of the whole of North East India.

8. Laitlum Canyons :
Adore the picturesque Shillong from Laitlum canyons; a wonderful spot covered in mystical mist and fog. The view point is one of the most popular and sought after attractions for adventure and nature lovers. It allures thousands of people from all parts of the world.

9. Mawphlang Sacred Forest :
Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a protected area situated in the East Khasi Hills of Shillong. Also known as Law Lyngdoh, it is preserved by the natives since ancient times as a part of their religious beliefs, in which forests are considered as a sacred entity.

10. Khasi Heritage Village :
A model village located about 1 hour from Shillong town showcasing culture and heritage of Khasis in Meghalaya.
