Welcome to Colombia
Colombia is a very safe country. I have lived here for 4 years as a foreigner and nothing has happened to me, besides, more than 4 million tourists come to Colombia every year (https://www.portafolio.co/economia/el-2018-fue-un-ano-historico-para-el-turismo-en-colombia-526378), which means that there are excellent tourist sites that you can surely visit.

Despite this, there are places in Colombia that you should not visit for your safety. Here is the list of places and the reasons why you shouldn’t go (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/colombia).

– Areas that are on the border with Venezuela: Composed of the entire border and some areas of the department of Norte de Santander, Arauca and Vichada. Border insecurity is due to the number of Venezuelan refugees in Colombia, several due to their conditions, come to rob in Colombia. Also, for reasons of drug trafficking (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_drug_trade_in_Colombia) and armed groups (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary_Armed_Forces_of_Colombia) located in the area.

– Areas in the Amazon: Composed by the department of Guaviare towards the south of Colombia. This whole area is forest. Although there are safe places, such as Florencia in Caquetá or Leticia in Amazonas, this is the perfect area to grow coca.

– Putumayo: Department that borders Ecuador and Peru to the south of Colombia. It is a place of difficult access and ideal for coca cultivation and drug trafficking.

– Pacific Coast: It is the place of settlement of armed groups. It is a difficult situation to control in the country because it is a very large forest area. Although in the Pacific there are tourist and safe areas such as Bahía Solano and Nuquí in the department of Chocó.

– Areas in Antioquia: There is a small area in Antioquia that must be avoided because it is the place of settlement of paramilitaries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramilitary), armed right-wing groups.

Also, although the big cities like Bogotá (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogotá), Medellín (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medell%C3%ADn) and Cali (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cali) are safe, it is important that as a tourist you have caution in areas that you don’t know, taking care of your personal valuables.
