10 PLACES TO VISIT IN ARAD
Ghidul orașului Arad. Arad City Guide.
I suppose that everyone who is a consumer of Romanian Hub content and studies the Romanian language would eventually like to go to Romania. While I live abroad in Thailand, I do go back home occasionally so I have a good archive of photos and videos which I want to share with you in this new series called Romanian Travel Guides.
Here are 10 places you should visit next time you’re in Arad.
1.
Palatul administrativ
The Administrative Palace
Built between 1872 and 1876, Palatul administrativ has a U-shaped building with a central clock tower that is 54 m heigh. Its overall architecture combines characteristics of new-Renaissance with the style of late medieval town halls.
2.
Malul Mureșului
Mureș River Bank
The northern bank of Mureș River, the second longest river in Romania, is flanked by kilometers long parks where you can jog, cycle, or just go for a walk. It can be easily reached from almost anywhere downtown.
3.
Podul pietonal peste Mureș
Pedestrian Bridge over Mureș
You can cross Mureș River on a fairly new pedestrian bridge and enter Ștrandul Neptun, an open air public swimming pool. During the off-season, when the pool is closed, you can still cross the river and chill out at one of the restaurants on the river bank.
4.
Catedrala Nașterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul
Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Catedral
This Ortodox cathedral was built between 1862 and 1865 and it is a beautiful example of classical neo-Baroque style of architecture.
5.
Teatrul Clasic Ioan Slavici
Ioan Slavici Classic Theatre
The theatre is centrally located in the axis of the city’s main boulevard and has a seating capacity of 1,250. The theatre was damaged by fire twice, in 1883 and 1957, but its Neo-Classical architectural style has been preserved.
6.
Monumentul Ostașului Român
The Romanian Soldier Monument
This monument is located behind Teatrul Clasic Ioan Slavici in Piața Avram Inacu, one of the largest public squares in the city. It was build to honor the Romanian soldiers who gave their life to free Romanian from fascist occupation.
7.
Catedrala Sfânta Treime
Holy Trinity Cathedral
This cathedral is a fairly new addition to the cityscape of Arad as it was inaugurated only in 2008. It has four domes and four golden crosses are mounted on each one of the domes. It’a a massive structure facing the city’s major roundabout.
8.
Lacul de la Pădurice
Little Forest Lake
Next to Catedrala Sfânta Treime there’s a quiet little artificial lake which takes its name after an adjoining park full of trees. During the winter, the lake transforms in an outdoor ice-skating rink while in milder weather it gives a nice reflection of the surrounding architecture.
9.
Consiliul Județean Arad
Arad City Council
The glass building of Arad City Council might not have a classical look like most of the architecture downtown Arad, but it’s modern look makes for a good photo opportunity.
10.
Cartierul Podgoria
Podgoria Neighborhood
Cartierul Podgoria is small and quaint neighborhood located right in the center of the city. Its alleys, brick four-story apartment buildings, and green areas make it as the perfect location for a walkabout in your city exploration.
If you’re coming to Romania from Hungary, then Arad must be your first stopover. Or else, make sure you spend one or two days in this great hometown of mine.
